Our expert looks at Bournemouth’s fixture with Chelsea when the Premier League record for yellow cards was broken
Bournemouth and Chelsea saw a record-breaking number of yellow cards at the Vitality Stadium this weekend with 14 shown by Anthony Taylor.
In this article, we take an in-depth look at how this happened and whether there are certain players to target in the card markets next weekend.
Saturday’s match between Bournemouth and Chelsea on the south coast saw an incredible 14 yellow cards shown by Anthony Taylor.
It certainly wasn’t one for the faint-hearted with some big tackles going in from the first minute, and more than a dozen players ending up in the referee’s notebook.
Six Bournemouth players and eight of the Chelsea team were booked, including goalkeeper Robert Sanchez who gave away a penalty before becoming the hero and saving from the spot.
The game broke the Premier League record for cards and showcased yet another case of poor discipline where several players remonstrated with the referee. Despite the number of cards, Anthony Taylor remained consistent, only booking players for obviously cautionable offences.
The previous record was set in the last campaign during the fixture between Tottenham and Sheffield United when 13 cards were awarded. Spurs scored twice in stoppage time to win that match.
Several cards were awarded for dissent and unsportsmanlike behaviour at Bournemouth this weekend and, unfortunately, this seems to have become a theme at the start of the new Premier League season.
Sunday’s North London Derby was another example of a game when several players were booked for time-wasting or provocation. Tottenham keeper Vicario was booked for an argument with Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber, while William Saliba was shown yellow after he prevented Spurs from taking a quick free kick.
After Declan Rice’s controversial sending-off last weekend against Brighton, it might be worth targeting the card markets in the coming months.
Next weekend, West Ham and Chelsea meet in a London derby while Manchester City and Arsenal go head to head in a huge match that could have long-term implications on the title race.
There could be plenty of cards in both matches and, having seen Chelsea and Arsenal this weekend, their players could be of betting interest.
Having been frustrated by his red card against Brighton last weekend, Declan Rice now has the tougher task of facing Manchester City. Given the importance of this fixture, he might have value in the card market depending on the price later in the week.
Another player worth looking at is Renato Veiga, who was booked for jumping into the away end last weekend when Chelsea scored at Bournemouth.
He had seven bookings in 23 games for Basel last season and could be another player who gets stuck in during Chelsea’s match with West Ham.
